Sex offenders now need to crawl back into the holes they once came out of. It was announced that any person with a conviction of a sex crime, would now be searchable by schools and institutions. Which brings to mind, why only schools and institutions? Why not make the registry public knowledge? Look, don’t get me wrong here, I think it’s high-time that this information became available – and the best place to start would be the schools!
With sex offences on the rise in South Africa, and with South Africa having the highest rape statistics of 117 cases per 100 000 people in 2007, and the latest stats report that 20 000 children get raped every year. Surely every parent in the country would like to get there hands on this list. Who knows where these low-lifes are slithering around, they could be down the road!
Im not sure how government is going to proceed with this, but in the UK, this information is not made accessible to citizens whereby in the US, some states go so far as to put these names on the internet for all to see.
As a mother, I would really like government to use initiative and set up a website where we all can search by location.
Please let me know what your thoughts are on this. I would really like to hear from you.
