Sex Offenders Registry

Posted in: Safety

Sex offenders now need to crawl back into the holes they once came out of. It was announced that any person with a conviction of a sex crime, would now be searchable by schools and institutions. Which brings to mind, why only schools and institutions? Why not make the registry public knowledge? Look, don’t get me wrong here, I think it’s high-time that this information became available – and the best place to start would be the schools!

With sex offences on the rise in South Africa, and with South Africa having the highest rape statistics of 117 cases per 100 000 people in 2007, and the latest stats report that 20 000 children get raped every year. Surely every parent in the country would like to get there hands on this list. Who knows where these low-lifes are slithering around, they could be down the road!

Im not sure how government is going to proceed with this, but in the UK, this information is not made accessible to citizens whereby in the US, some states go so far as to put these names on the internet for all to see.

As a mother, I would really like government to use initiative and set up a website where we all can search by location.

Please let me know what your thoughts are on this.  I would really like to hear from you.

I am not sure really how I feel about this – I think it is good that the schools will be given access to this information.

I think there should be a closely monitored list where they have to register at the police station if they move into a new area and may not live within certain range of schools, parks etc. They should be compulsory groups that they must attend. They should get regular visits from the child protection unit.

I dont know if I agree it should be out there for public access – there are too many vigilante type individuals. On the other hand if there is someone I need my children to stay clear of and I can identify them I would want to be able to do this … as said I am not sure how I feel.

I was molested as a child and know the hell it is to try and lead a normal life. It invades every facet of your existance and changes who you are forever.
Why should these people enjoy our protection. I want to who they are and where they live so that my children and grand children can to protected.

I am a mother of two boys, and with the 2010 Soccer Worl Cup comming up there are mails doing the rounds of child abductions that take place, and that these children abducted are used for child pornography!

This makes me sick to my stomach that there are people out there that are on the prowl to ruin the innocence of children. What the hell is wrong with people.

I am terrified and from the little research I have done, I ahve realised that our country is behind in technology, such as the states which has the amber alert as well as maps that provide you with information on the sex offenders in your area.

Surely our children deserve more and yet I feel we don’t do enough. We should be able to identify these pigs as I know I would stay clear, rather than not know. Of coarse there are vigilante type individuals out there, but we need to stand together for the sake of our chil.dren, and should one of these animals be taken out by a vigilante’s well so be it, one less pig to worry about.

Why should these people be protected? So avoid humiliation? What about the hulmiliation and long term damage they do to the children out there?

My friend just found out her husband is and has been sexually molesting their daughter. The government needs to step up their game so we can get these bastards names and pictures up on a website for all to see. To all the mothers and fathers in the country lets get the government to NAME and SHAME

I think this registry should be made public otherwise it serves very little practical purpose and not a powerful deterrent, as it should be.

As an example, if you lived in a security complex, you would like to know the person moving in is not on such a list? I’m sick and tired of this general attitude of protecting criminals’ rights – they gave that up when they comitted the crime.

Being a victim of an offence as a child, I know how hard it is to understand that most offenders were victims themselves. My offender was in fact a minor who was molested by family members. This circle has to stop. To threaten people is no way to handle this problem. Children must be thought to speak out against any misdeed and offenders must be caught early on. Maybe one day all children will be safe from these offences. Unitl then, I have decided not to have children. I feel that is only way to stop offenders from harming me again.

I think we need to monitor the courts and take our own pics of these pigs and paste them in a web site the whole of south africa can see.

AND TO THESE PIGS YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CANT HIDE.

There has has been no official release of the list yet. They are still trying to iron out all the problems with implementing and maintaining such a list. Hopefully it will be available soon! I will keep everyone posted.

I came across this site as I was trying to have a look at the list. I found out last night that my 14yr old daughter is cutting herself. she was “tried” by a family member… I want to see if there was any other accusasions against him before as his past is a mistery to us all- his wife included. “lucky” for us he never managed to physical molest my daughter but the fact that he tried to see whether she will stop him is sickening enough.
these bastards should have no protection against the public eye- PUBLISH THE LIST FOR ALL TO SEE!

    Hi guys,
I was informed the other day that South Africa only has five names on its sex offenders registry and was trolling the internet to see if I could find it.
I’m a journalist and want to do a story on making this list available.
Would anyone here who has been personally affected by a molester’s action be willing to talk? Anonymity will be respected.
    Please email me at davids@caxton.co.za.
    Kind regards.

Where we are helping a victim now 10, she was molested when she was 7, badly scarred. The monster is still walking free,Francois S********, Nelspruit, his lawyer, mr. Hi Natasha

I’m worried that just starting “our” own list may lead to legal complications. As much as we know these monsters are guilty, we unfortunately cannot classify them as such until they are found guilty by the court. I’m no lawyer but If I was you, I’d be very careful with how you proceed (hence the reason I had to edit your post to remove most of the name)

I have been involved for over 17 years preparing parents of children who have been sexually abused in going to court. Last year I published a book called “Every Parents Nightmare”. a guide for parents and teachers or anyone who deals with a child disclosing sexual abuse. I have dealt with cases where more than one child has been sexually abused by a paedohile , I am convinced from my experience in this field that had a register been available to parents and teachers , more children would have not been victims, as the parents could have checked up on the register to affirm the “rumors” of that particular paedophile. Another point that was very clear to me on more than 3 occasions was that the arresting officer is allowed to oppose bail if he knows that the arrested paedophile has been brought before court on previous charges of a similar nature. There are so many arguments for the paedophile register to be made available to the public that out weigh the reasons not to have one

My stepsister went through a horrible early childhood by someone she did not expect it from. Not that one expects it from anyone, but the shock & trauma was worse as a result.

I found this website online: http://www.nambla.org
Admin, please *do not censor* it; by creating their own public website, these guys clearly don’t care if anyone else sees it.
In the “About Us” section, this man basically declares war on the family and on children’s rights – ironically, he claims to be fighting for children’s rights. I am appalled, and feel like I have to wash my eyes.

I am Louise De Waals brother-in-law and our family has been devastated by a convicted pedophile who was known to the police. So well known that they knew from the identikit where he lived and who he was. But as i’m sure you all know, it was all for naught. We will never know if a register would of made a difference for Louise but one can’t help but wonder.Everyone knows her name but no-one can tell us who he is… yet.

I would fully support a sex offenders list if it prevents another child being brutalised and killed. But as with anything it has been used and distributed responsibly. Perhaps obtaining a copy from an area’s police station that has to be signed out with a valid form of ID and proof of residencial address under supervision from a police officer would be a solution? Surely schools, creches, and after school facilities should be provided with a copy or at least pictures of the offenders. It is their responsibility to protect their students as much as it is to educate them.

RIP Louise De Waal i will strive to ensure that your murder was not just a meaningless statistic but a move to secure a safer future for all our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Not even animals are unkind to their young. And Nambla…how sick and twisted they justify their own behaviour. I AM ALL FOR THE REGISTER.

Firstly I want to say to the De Waal family that the whole South Africa is in mourning with you. You are in our thoughts and prayers every day. Johannes / Jaco Steyn is a resident in the suburb I am staying. I do believe that there are 3 other paedophiles living in our quite suburb. Why can I not have access to their identity, to show and warn my children? Why is the law protecting these people?? What about our children do they not have the right to be protected?? Who and what is our law actually protecting, the victim or the offender??? Seems that offenders have more rights in this country than our children.

it is all good and well – protecting the individual, privacy, etc etc. These offenders gave up their rights the moment they took that first step to attempt these deeds. I am sorry, but their details should be made public. Take it for yourself … won’t you think twice before committing a crime if you know your name and picture is out there for everyone to see? Why are the identity of murders published? Molestation and rape are worse – far worse!!!! Only a woman who went through something like this will understand.
Dave, thank you – I will commit with you. Louise’s death won’t be just another statistic!

I just found out my ex husband has been molesting my 4 and a half year old. The legal process is long and exhausting. This all happened in December and its almost the end of January and he is still as free as a bird and still a preditor to the neighbourhood kids and other familiy members with kids who go there.
His daughter from his 1st wife also claims to have been molested by him. To think if there was some kind of a list showing sex offenders I would never even had married the dirty pig.
I have the right to know who to protect my child from. Sex offenders give up their rights to be treated like normal human beings with rights the minute they lay their dirty, stinking, perverted hands on an innocent defenseless child.
